Oil Tanker Hijacked? Could It Be Our Future ?

I must admit from the start that I am somewhat surprised that this story is not getting more play in the media. An Saudi oil tanker has been hijacked by Somali terrorists and is seemingly being held for ransom of it’s $ 100 million cargo.

According to the news reports this is an unusual event even in the world of piracy that has become common in parts of the Indian Ocean

The Sirius Star is the biggest tanker ever to be hijacked, with a cargo of 2m barrels - a quarter of Saudi Arabia’s daily output - worth more than $100m.

The vessel was captured in what the navy called an “unprecedented” attack 450 nautical miles (830km) off the Kenyan coast on Sunday.

Its international crew of 25, including two Britons, is said to be safe.

The hijacking was highly unusual both in terms of the size of the ship and the fact it was attacked so far from the African coast, says BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner.

In reading this story I can’t help but to see it through the lens of 9/11 and wonder if this could be part of our future. Imagine a group of terrorists using this example to hijack a tanker of LPG or some equally volatile substance. They drive it into Houston or New Orleans or New York harbor and set it off, resulting in a disaster beyond imagination.

Sadly, I think that this is much like 9/11 in that even with the advance knowledge of this possibility there is little we can do to stop it. We can’t have police agents on every ship in the world. Our only hope is that the existing security proves sufficient.

Needless to say, I will be VERY glad to be wrong about this.

County sides with McCain, Carney

BY ROBERT L. BAKER

Wyoming County Press Examiner

Although the county cast most of its vote for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, the eventual winner, Barack Obama made history by garnering more votes than any Democrat ever before seeking the office.

McCain carried the county by just under 1,000 votes, 6.943-5,974.

With more than 13,300 votes cast after absentees and provisional votes were factored in, roughly 69.2 percent of the voters went to the polls in the county on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

In a county with an electorate that is roughly 54 percent Republican, McCain garnered 52.4 percent of the vote to Obama’s 45 percent.

Although Republicans carried the day in nearly every race cross the county, in the hotly contested race for Tenth Congressional District, the incumbent Democrat, Chris Carney won with 58.1 percent of the county’s vote to Republican challenger Chris Hackett’s 41.6 percent.

It was the first time in more than 75 years that a Democrat had attracted a majority of voters in the county for a congressional race.

Even when Tunkhannock’s Elmer Dietrich, a Democrat, won a seat in Congress in 1934, he lost the county by 7,000 votes.

Carney was jubilant on election night and said he was just happy to be returned to Congress.

PDOT includes bike boulevards in $847 million federal funding request

adams has forwarded to congressional leaders a plead for for $24 million to build a 110-mile network of bike boulevards.

Portland City Commissioner and Mayor-elect Sam Adams hasn’t forgotten about the $24 million, 110-mile bicycle boulevard he tried to get funding for in his Safe, Sound and Green Streets proposal. That plan died back in July (after a swirl of political gamesmanship), but Adams now hopes funding for the bike boulevards will be included (along with $820 million in other projects) in a federal economic stimulus plan being worked on in Congress.

There is growing momentum for a public-works-based stimulus bill that would use transportation infrastructure projects as a catalyst for job creation and economic growth. President-elect Obama has voiced support for such an idea, as has House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — who was in Portland last month and spoke about it with Congressman Earl Blumenauer.

The City of Portland has identified eight categories of high-priority projects that total $847 million, and if fully funded, would produce an estimated 8,850 jobs.

According to sources close to the effort, the stimulus package will prioritize “shovel-ready” projects that are ready to begin immediately. One such project is Portland’s bike boulevard network. PDOT feels it qualifies as “shovel-ready” because it has been vetted by PDOT planners and the community (via a series of open houses during the Safe, Sound and Green Streets process).

This morning, the City of Portland and Senator Ron Wyden’s office held a press conference downtown to present their multi-agency proposal. Representatives from ODOT (Jason Tell), Multnomah County (Ted Wheeler), Metro, and others were on hand.

According to Shoshanah Oppenheim, transportation policy adviser for Adams, the agencies have put together a “coordinated, comprehensive package of very direct requests so that the Senators are prepared when they go back to Washington.”

Mayor-elect Adams spoke at the press conference and said that the City of Portland has identified eight categories of high-priority projects that total $847 million, and if fully funded, would produce an estimated 8,850 jobs.

Among the projects on the list (I’m still waiting on a detailed breakdown) are streetcar expansion, $65 million for paving and safety improvements, bridge repair, and the bike boulevard network.

Oppenheim told me via phone this morning that the eight paving projects would include Columbia Blvd., Cully Blvd., Hawthorne Blvd., Madison Ave., Front Ave., and others.

Speaking at the press conference this morning (according to a copy of his talking points I’ve received from his office), Adams stressed the importance of these paving projects, saying their are “critical to our transportation system” and that they could “break ground as soon as it is funded”.

Adams stressed that Madison is a “critical link to the Hawthorne Bridge for thousands of cyclists and vehicles” as well as a key bus route.

“If funded,” said Adams, “these projects could start in 4-6 months, producing more than 312 construction jobs that, in turn, hint at a revitalizing economy.”

The City of Portland has also requested that the money is doled out by local municipalities (instead of by the US DOT or ODOT). At the press conference this morning, Adams said that this would allow PDOT to “spend the money quickly, leverage multiple sources of funding effectively and gauge the pulse of community needs most accurately.”

The american spectator

Not surprisingly, Congressman Earl Blumenauer is spearheading much of this effort on Capitol Hill. I spoke to Blumenauer’s Advisor for Livable Communities Meeky Blizzard this morning. Blizzard said that the plan would not provide funding for specific projects (careful to avoid any semblance to “earmarks”), but rather that their office is working to shape the definition of the type of projects that are most likely to be funded.

Blizzard said there’s a concern both in Portland and in other parts of the country that the infrastructure plan “isn’t just all asphalt-related…that we’re thinking more broadly about the projects and about stimulating a green economy.” (That’s political-spea

Election day, early edition open thread

in the course of those of you who are voting today, allocation your experience. call 1-866-our-vote and report if you have problems casting your ballot. you can record incidents at the voter terminating wiki.

* How were the lines? * What’s the weather like? It is rainy here, so I’m concerned turnout will be lower, though 66% of NC citizens have early voted. * What was your wait time? * What is the GOTV like in your area (we had Obama canvassers visit our home on Sunday)

If you have photos, feel free to post in the comments. Daimeon just sent in this one from his polling precinct in Virginia - 6AM, the line is out the door:

Oc vote

Early voting stats for NC:

42% - or about 2.6 million registered voters cast their votes early

By Party 51.5% - Are registered Democrats 30% - Are registered Republicans 18.4% - Are unaffiliated

By Age 8.6% - Early voters who are 18-24 20.5% - Early voters who are 45-54 8.9% - Early voters who are 75 or older

By County 46% - Approximate number of Wake voters who turned out early. More than half the voters in Durham and Orange counties cast ballots.

Polls are open today from 6:30 a.m to 7:30 p.m. Voters who are in line at 7:30 p.m. must be allowed to cast a ballot.

More below the fold. TV in NC polluted by Republican slime ads last night:

A group called National Republican Trust had a heinous Jeremiah Wright commercial running all night here - it paid a boatload of bucks for an ad buy in NC. It was almost on a continuous loop all night during the SNL show that we were watching. There were nasty anti-Obama advertisements every commercial break, almost all of them by 527s, I don’t recall seeing McCain campaign-sponsored ads.

Of course this was going to happen. McCain himself said he wouldn’t “go there” with Wright, but that doesn’t mean these 527s can’t - and quite frankly, I don’t think this tired old saw is going to work at this point.
