The Portland Trailblazers Play Hockey?

There are two places in the universe where you will see an entire basketball starting lineup sit out at one time. There are two places where you will see more than five members of a bench play extended minutes while all your starters rest. Here are the two places…

1. An NBA video game

2. Portland, Oregon

I have never seen anything like it. But not only is it working, it may have Portland in the NBA championship picture even faster than I thought (and I said they’d have one in five years) download movies.

In managing the Blazers’ minutes closer to that of a hockey team, coach Nate McMillan has imposed different lines in his coaching schemes. But what is fascinating is that a couple of the lines do not contain a single starter.

In fact, if you look at the way this team has been playing during their most recent hot streak; they may be the most unique team in all of basketball. And it begins and ends with their incredible depth.

The Blazers have a genuine superstar on their team in Brandon Roy. And he only plays 36 minutes a game. Reason being, the Blazers go 10 deep, consistently. While the overwhelming majority of NBA teams have a seven or eight-man rotation, the Blazers have 10 players that average more than 15 minutes per game, and every single one of them has been contributing.

Spaniards Sergio Rodriguez and Rudy Fernandez compliment the starting backcourt of Roy and Steve Blake incredibly well. Rodriguez is one of the team’s top assist men and Fernandez can hit a shot from pretty much anywhere, even with a man in his face.

The frontcourt subs have been just as effective. Travis Outlaw is evolving into a dynamic swingman and Joel Przybilla is a big time contributor on the boards. Don’t forget Channing Frye, who of all of the big men on this team has the best jump shot.

But the kicker is when the five bench players all play together, they do not look like a second line at all. They, not the starters, were the line responsible for beginning to pull away from the Knicks on Monday night.

But the real advantage that this playing style provides actually has nothing to do with what is happening right now.

We are nearing the first quarter mark of the NBA season. And with the exception of Greg Oden, the Blazers have not been struck by the injury bug. I can’t help but want to attribute that to the fact that the minutes have been divided in such a fascinating manner.

The less exhausted you are; the less hurt you are; and more importantly the more fresh you are to play on a daily basis. I guess what I’m saying is this…

Yukon cornelius

If this team continues to play in this manner with this style, they might have more energy than any other team in the playoffs.

Not to shabby for a team that was a laughingstock less than four years ago and didn’t splurge on free agents to get the job done.

Britney Spears: “The Whole Year Has Been a Hell of a Ride”

In January’s Glamour, Britney Spears opens up about her “crazy year,” her new album Circus and her future.

“The whole year has been a hell of a year for me,” she says, referring to her forced psychiatric hospitalizations, loss of custody of her two sons and infamous head shaving.

Recording her latest album Circus — which drops Tuesday on her 27th birthday — “has helped take my mind off certain things,” she says. “For me, my music is therapy.”

The singer — who made her first live performance Wednesday in Germany since her rocky 2007 MTV Video Music Awards stint — also admits she “didn’t know exactly where I stood with everyone” after the past year.

“When I received the awards and [the audience] stood for me, it showed me how much love is out there,” says Spears, who swept the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

Her life is calmer these days, she says.

“I don’t like going out. I hate clubs. I hate being around too many people,” the singer tells Glamour. “I love my home and staying in bed and watching Dancing With the Stars or reading a Danielle Steel novel. I’m kind of boring.”

She’s also been hitting the gym.

On her post-baby body, Spears says, “My body…completely changed [after giving birth], and I have had to work hard at getting it back.”

What are her goals for 2009?

Now Accepting Applications: The Ultimate Fighter 9 Coaching Job Available!

We all know the story of The Ultimate Fighterby now; take 32 fighters give them a chance to fight for a UFC contract. As with all seasons The Ultimate Fighter 9 is looking for fighters to coach the American team. Middleweight contender Michael Bisbing has signed on to coach the United Kingdom team.

Man of the house soundtrack

As per usual the season’s coaches will fight each-other on a pay per view card, or maybe even at the finale. The winner will most likely get a middleweight title shot at Anderson Silva. So one question remains,”Who will coach the American Team?”

I’m here to break down the top five candidates, enjoy!!

5. Demian Maia

The pros with Demian Maia is that he’s a very likable, and he’s also undefeated. Although they’d have to drop the whole U.S.A. v.s. U.K. theme, the fight between Bisbing and Maia would be great. Many people seem to think that Maia could challenge Silva with his world class submissions, but think that he’s not ready yet. A win over a name like Bisbing would surely shoot him up the middleweight ladder.

One big con would be they whole changing of the theme. They obviously couldn’t go with U.S.A. v.s. U.K. because Maia is from Brazil. They could however change it to Brazil v.s. U.K. and I’d still watch it.

I think Maia is a great candidate, but will not get the call because Dana seems set to have U.S.A. v.s. U.K. Also because they’ll most likely build his record up more before he faces off with Silva or another big name.

4. Rich Franklin

This would be a great candidate, he’s a very well known name, and he’s previously coached on The Ultimate Fighter. He would also test Bisbing in ways no one else has, this would also give Rich a third chance to avenge his losses against Anderson Silva. Although Franklin has went up to 205, I think a promise of a title shot if he beats Bisbing might get his attention.

I know that Dana has already offered this position to Rich and he declined, but that answer may change depending on the UFC 93 outcome. A loss could force him down to 185, but on the other hand a win could make 205 his permanent home. Time will tell, but Rich Franklin is a great candidate.

3. Nate Marquardt

Nate Marquardt is a very good candidate, he’s fought Silva once, and he’s well known. He has a record of of 6-2 in the UFC, with loses to Anderson Silva and Thales Leites. Mant thought he would’ve won the bout with Leites, but was deducted a points for an illegal knee, and a elbow to the back of the head.

Marquardt is a marketable guy, and is hungry to get another shot at the champ. A win over Michael Bisbing could sky rocket his chances of a re-match. Marquardt may not get the position because of Dana White not thinking he’s a big enough name. Give him time and he’ll win fans over.

I might just have to vote Marquardt in ‘09!

2. Chael Sonnen

He is technically the WEC middleweight champion after dominating Paulo Filho. He is almost certainly going to the UFC, and not well known by the casual fan. What better way to give him exposure than put him on T.V. as a coach? Everyone watches The Ultimate Fighter, and again a win over Bisbing could volt him to the top of the heap.

He’s already beaten Silva’s ex-training partner, now give him a chance to fight against Silva himself. He’s a very classy guy, and I think would represent Team America well. What better way to introduce him into the UFC than throw him in as a coach.

1. Dan Henderson

Dan Henderson is a very well known and very marketable fighter. He’s also the man most believe is capable of beating Anderson Silva. He was the Pride FC’smiddleweight champion before hand. His nick-names are Hendo and Hollywood, what more could you ask for?

Hendo is a great fighter, and has also been offered the position, he didn’t seem too enthused. After UFC 93 we’ll see how the 185 division will turn out, I believe the loser of Franklin/Henderson will move back into the middleweight pool. Henderson has also been seeking a re-match since his loss at UFC 82. What a perfect scenario; coach a team for your country, if you win your country can brag to produce the best fighters, if you lose you can fight the other country’s coach and maybe get a chance at Anderson Silva.

Henderson is my No. 1 pick right now, what do you think?

Rookie: The Story Of Joe Flacco

It was draft day. John Harbaugh found himself in a tough position, as did everybody else in the room that day. As head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh held the fate of his team in his hands.

He and his scouting department had been debating who to select with the 8th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft for months. Harbaugh drove to Radio City Music Hall that day with peace of mind because he knew that he would draft Joe Flacco; the strong quarterback out of Delaware.

As the draft got closer and closer to their 8th pick, Harbaugh was delighted to see that Flacco wasn’t even being debated as an option among other teams.

When the Atlanta Falcons choose quarterback Matt Ryan with the 3rd overall pick, however, that inner peace turned to turmoil. What was wrong with Flacco?

The decision to draft Flacco was not an easy one to make. Some draft projectors had this young quarterback going in the third or fourth round. To pick up Flacco any earlier would be considered by them as a rookie mistake.

Harbaugh was not without pressure this late April day. He was in his first year of coaching a professional franchise, coming off a decade of assistant coaching with the Philadelphia Eagles. The first nine years were spent in the unglamorous job of special teams coach. Harbaugh was dreaming big, though, and wanted to become a head coach.

Special teams coordinators are rarely hired as head coaches. In order to make Harbaugh’s dream a possibility, head coach Andy Reid switched him to defensive backs. Sure enough, after just one year he was selected as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

There were big boots left behind by former coach Brian Billick. Harbaugh’s precedor was a football mastermind, and high expectations were thrust on his shoulders as soon as his plane touched down in Baltimore.

Now, just months after his hiring, Harbaugh faced a decision that would shape his team’s future for years to come. Drafting a quarterback in the first round is never an easy choice to make, but in Harbaugh’s position it was even tougher. The only quarterbacks on the Baltimore roster were Troy Smith and Kyle Boller, and if what certain scouts were saying about Flacco were true, he could easily wrestle his way to the starting position in training camp.

Flacco’s coach at Delaware was determined to get his quarterback drafted as high as possible. In an interview with a Baltimore newspaper, K.C. Keeler said, “I asked a number of different scouts who has a better arm in the NFL (than Flacco) and they couldn’t give me a name.”

To those who thought Flacco would be a third- or fourth-round pick Keeler said, “Put Joe next to the other quarterbacks in the country, and he’ll blow by them.”

Flacco had won the long distance throw competition in ESPN’s State Farm College Football All-Star Challenge, as well as the Taco Bell QB scramble. But it wasn’t just his physical attributes that attracted him to Harbaugh.

Sawgrass mills mall

Delaware runs an NFL-style offense, and any starting quarterback needs experience in that type of system before they can be thrown on the field and expected to perform well. On top of that, Delaware coach Keeler had been grooming Flacco for the NFL for years. They both felt he was ready.

But now, as the 8th selection in the 2008 Draft came closer and closer, Harbaugh had millions of second thoughts debating whether a rookie should ever be a starting quarterback in this league.

Peyton Manning started every game as a rookie and he’s turned out alright. Then again, so did David Carr. Ryan Leaf, Charlie Batch, and Joey Harrington all started at least nine games their rookie season, and Harbaugh would certainly lose some of his new reputation if that happened to Flacco.

Maybe he should take another route this draft. There was a need at running back, why not Arkansas superstar Darren McFadden? A few minutes later the Oakland Raiders staked claim to him.

No, he needed to make a decision. If he wanted Flacco he needed to attempt to trade down, because Harbaugh was convinced he was the only one in the state of New York who was sure that Flacco was going to be great.

As Harbaugh worked the phones like a telemarketer there was always that uneasy feeling in the back of his mind. Jonathan Stewart was still available, and ready for taking… Before they knew what had happened, GM Ozzie Newsome, with the help of Harbaugh, had traded their 8th overall pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in return for the 18th pick and a package of others.

While analysts were immediately calling their trade a work of genius, Harbaugh was sweating bullets. He was convinced of Flacco’s value, but nobody else seemed to be. Flacco seemed a perfect quarterback, one who was not arrogant, self-centered, or cocky. In fact, when asked by a coach why he doesn’t dance around after a touchdown pass Flacco …

Mom guilty of misdemeanors in MySpace suicide

Filed under: Uncategorized — justprocrastinating @ 12:14 am

(CNN) — A Missouri woman was convicted of three misdemeanor counts in the case of a 13-year-old girl who committed suicide after she was criticized on the Web site MySpace.com.

Lori Drew was convicted of three counts for her part in the Internet hoax that prosecutors say led to Meier's suicide. acheter cialis

Megan Meier, 13, hanged herself in her bedroom after being targeted in a MySpace hoax.

But a jury declined to convict Lori Drew of the more serious conspiracy charge in a landmark case testing the limits of cyberbullying.

Drew, 49, of O’Fallon, Missouri, was accused of fraudulently using the site to pose as a teenage boy who feigned romantic interest in the girl, Megan Meier.

Meier committed suicide after her perceived love interest spurned her, telling her the world would be a better place without her, according to federal prosecutors.

At the time of her death, Meier’s family and Drew’s family lived near each other in suburban St. Louis.

The teen’s mother, Tina Meier, had mixed reactions to the split verdict.

"Of course, we were wanting convictions on all of them. But it is still a stepping stone," Meier said.

"It’s never been about vengeance. This is about justice — justice not only for Megan, it’s justice for everybody who has to go through this, with the computer and being harassed," said Meier, who attended the trial. "I don’t want another family to have to stand here and go through what I’ve had to endure."

Drew was convicted of three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress on Meier.

U.S. District Judge George Wu declared a mistrial on a fourth count of conspiracy after a California jury failed to reach a verdict.

After the verdicts were read, Drew’s defense attorneys said they intend to file a motion for a new trial on the misdemeanor counts. That motion must be filed by December 29.

The original charges against Drew carried a maximum penalty of five years in prison upon conviction. The misdemeanor charges each carry a maximum penalty of a year in prison and a fine of $100,000, according to Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in the Central District of California.

Drew was indicted in May. The indictment was returned in Los Angeles, California, because MySpace is based there.

The indictment alleges that Drew and others created an account on MySpace under the name "Josh Evans" and used the account to contact Meier, beginning what the girl thought was an online romance with a 16-year-old boy.

Don’t Miss

With those actions, prosecutors alleged that Drew violated MySpace’s terms of service by using fraudulent information to obtain personal information about a juvenile and to "harass, abuse or harm other members."

U.S. attorney Thomas O’Brien said he was "comfortable" with the trial’s outcome.

O’Brien said the case sends a message that his office will go after anyone who attempts to go after a gir
